Head and Neck Disorders and Treatments

Sinus Disorders

Many people, unfortunately, suffer from a sinus infection (sinusitis), and in the US, sinus problems have overtaken backache as the number one chronic illness!

Viruses typically cause sinusitis, but the infection can become bacterial or even fungal. Most of the time, “sinus” problems are due to nasal allergies rather than an actual sinus disease.

Snoring

Snoring is not only a social nuisance but can also be a symptom of a more serious underlying problem.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent condition affecting millions worldwide. Snoring is a symptom of OSA, but more worrying is the fact that many stop breathing (apnoea) during sleep because of upper airway obstruction. This increases the likelihood of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, daytime sleepiness, motor vehicle accidents, and diminished quality of life.

Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a condition that occurs during sleep. Apnoea means “no breath” or “stopped breathing”. When an individual has sleep apnoea, the air stops flowing into their lungs for 10 seconds or longer, and during this period, the individual ceases to breathe.

Most of the time, the individuals suffering do not realise that they have this condition. It can occur more than 30 times an hour, and this constant triggering of breathing can put a strain on the body. Many people report feelings of exhaustion, even after waking up after a whole night of sleeping — this may cause long-term health effects.

Sinus Infection Treatment

Sinus infection or sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses. It commonly starts as a viral infection and becomes secondarily infected with bacteria. In this part of the world, warmth and humidity can also result in fungal infection of the sinuses.

Sinuses are air-filled cavities within the bones of the upper face. When the sinus becomes inflamed or infected, mucus thickens and clogs up the openings of one or more sinuses. This causes fluid to build up inside the sinuses due to pressure, resulting in bacteria becoming trapped, multiplying and infecting the lining.

Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction that causes sneezing, congestion, and a runny nose. It affects up to 13.1% of the Singaporean population and is commonly triggered by allergens like dust mites, pollen, pet dander, mould and insects.

Nasal Allergies

Nasal allergy, often known as allergic rhinitis, is a widespread condition that affects people everywhere, including Singapore. This condition usually develops when the immune system overreacts to a substance that is usually harmless. Some substances that may trigger this reaction include pollen, dust, and mould.

Neck Lumps

Is there a lump in your neck? Are you worried that it might be something serious? If the lump moves when you swallow, it could be a thyroid nodule.

Neck lumps can be small or large, and while most are benign, some may be a sign of an underlying condition such as infection or malignancy.

Thyroid Cancer

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland that plays a significant role in the regulation of metabolism.

The most common cause of neck lumps is enlarged lymph nodes. However, in some cases, they may arise due to thyroid cancer.

Blocked nose

A blocked nose can be a major annoyance in the day and cause us to have poor sleep quality at night. It can also be a symptom of more serious problems like polyps or even tumours. An ENT surgeon can help exclude such problems with the aid of an endoscope.
